Sheikh Taj Din al-Hilali (Jackass!)

Recently, this guy has stirred up a storm in Australian religious and political circles. His extremist views on women have been publicised in all major world newspapers. These days, any extremist view from a muslim is published everywhere anyway!! The following article in The Australian - News published his views on the recent attacks on women:
"In the religious address on adultery to about 500 worshippers in Sydney last month, Sheik Hilali said: "If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?"
"The uncovered meat is the problem."
That is a pretty f*cking disgusting sermon if you ask me!! It's a disgusting comparison as well! People like him destroy Islam's name. Extremism has no place in Islam and neither does Islam advocate it. How the hell did f*ckface become the mufti anyways? His supporters, like all fickle minded people of our own nations, voted him in! Australia has been and most probably always will be a racially biased nation. Mind you, I'm not generalizing here. I'm not pointing to all Australians, but majority of them are. A lot of Australians I've met and worked with in this country, sooner or later, I've found out how they really think.
This cleric's views will only further damage the relations between muslims and others. I think he likes the publicity too.
Read his full sermon on Adultery and Theft. What do you think? I mean, can they really give sermons like that in mosques? It's sick.

What is even worse is, he did not get laid off, asked to leave or anything by the islamic council, mainly run by Lebanese. They said they condemned his statements but felt no further action was necessery...

Wimps.

He did not get fired coz he put the blame on the women instead of the lebanese men. He is breeding extremism by giving these kind of sermons. He does that coz he knows people will come and listen. Those who believe what he says and those who are just curious. I wonder what he'll pick up next.

I never heard about Australians being racially/religiously biased, but in all honesty, I can't blame them now after I read what the Mufti of Australia is saying!!!

QC: don't you believe it. I once thought that us Kiwis and Ockers were some of the most open-minded people on the planet.

Sadly, after reading some random blogs from the area, I find that bigotry, racism and ignorance is also found there. It disgusts me.

This whole episode is a mixed bag of stuff that is innocuous and stuff that makes me go "What the hell?" I don't like what this Sheikh al-Hilali said, or the way he said it. Every culture has its own contextual form of communication, and in the "feminist" West, comparing a woman to a piece of meat is like waving the red flag to a bull. In another cultural context, the Eastern/Muslim one, though, it does have resonance. It resonates in the fact that we are taught in Islam that a woman should stay covered as "That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed." Qur'an 33:59 The Quran is basically telling us that women who go uncovered are surely going to be harrassed, and regarded as "not respectable." We can argue with that and say that men should not be that way, and with a little bit of re-programming, they can be more enlightened...but the fact is that the covered woman will always still be more "respected," for lack of a better term.

But you know, he was not just quoting from the Qur'an. Before his whole cat/meat analogy, he quoted some scholar nobody ever heard of (well, ok, I didn't hear of him, maybe others have) and that was really far more agregious: The Al-Rafihi scholar says in one of his literary works, he says: If I come across a crime of rape - kidnap and violation of honour - I would discipline the man and teach him a lesson in morals, and I would order the woman be arrested and jailed for life. This I really do not get.

And this is the bigger problem. This man is not adhering to Qur'an and Hadeeth. He went beyond it, to stipulate that in the event of a woman being raped SHE should be held accountable, while the man should merely be taught a lesson in morals. What the hell is that? Being uncovered and subsequently raped equals to a jail sentence for the victim? Is that how Islam works, Mufti?! I don't think so!

He used a retarded analogy, in comparing men to animals without self-control and women to mindless lumps of meat. And he quoted some ancient guy to make his point...but that hardly makes him an extremist. Extremist is calling for jihad and proclaiming affiliation with UbL. Telling women to cover up for their own deen (and safety) is not really extremist.

And Australians/Europeans/Americans really don't need a reason to be racially biased. Even if the non-white world never uttered an unwise word, they would still find a way to feel and act racially superior. I say this having been born and bred in THE apartheid nation of South Africa. So perhaps my view is jaundiced.

Love your blog, I lurk here often, and felt compelled to weigh in. :)

@arablady.. my point was why is he totalling blaming the women. Don't you think the lebanese men are to blame as well? I know what the quran says about hijab. I think comparing women to uncovered meat is wrong. Didn't the men disobey God? Why did the mufti take their side? Later when things got out of control, he tried to twist his own words and say that the men were wrong too! Perhaps he's brewing this controversy to get some publicity! So many clerics do this. He's nothing but a wannabe "celebrity mutawwa"!! Shame on him!

@nomad.. welcome!

Ya Arab lady, I don't know what islam tehey teach y'all over there but Islam does not see uncovered women like that. Women did not always cover up and when they did, they did so in very very different ways, shapes, styles and forms. They did not wear abayas and niqaab 3ala ´7aleeji style... Muslim women of westafrica carried on their quite liberal view of what is concidered nudity and awrah, and scholars back then made interpretations of what was modesty based on that cultural context.

Today that is never done. Anal men ruling our religious ideas and people listening blindly to what they say. Question? Read? It's all there.

You can blame the interpretations and patriarcal expressions of islam but not islam itself. There is no place in the quran talking badly about women who don't cover.

I have seen this unfortunately in a lot of men and women grown up in the gulf region and other parts of the world, their view on islam is so culturally and patriarchally influenced...no wonder with such ignorant teachers.
